Nepal first mover in
implementation of innovative Dutch water turbine technology
ZIJDEWIND, THE NETHERLANDS, July 21st, 2011 – Glow Tech and Tocardo have closed contracts to deploy a 100 KW
water turbine in Trishuli River at Devghat by
December 2011. In February 2012 a 6 turbine demonstration project will be
deployed in Bheri River. Furthermore the
companies expect to announce various projects in early 2012 ranging over 100 MW
to be installed in 2012 - 2014.
Glow Tech and Tocardoare in the process of setting up a JV company to carry out R&D and
customizing turbines so as to make them widely usable and more cost efficient.
Currently Nepal is in the state of an energy
crisis -16 hours of load shedding on a nearly daily basis in the dry season
-with a severe impact on industries and the economy. The government has
declared the energy sector in emergency and announced an ambitious plan of
adding 2500 MW in the next four and a half years.
When customized for Nepalese rivers, free flow turbine
technology can bring a power revolution in Nepal. Cooperatives, communities
and SMEs can generate power from the rivers in their locality. Substantial
local employment is foreseen. The turbines can be controlled remotely.
