The T500 power class correspons to the high power range (350-500 kW nominal output). This series is currently being developed. The device is suitable for offshore sites in which water depth is not directly a limiting factor and water velocity is high. Depending on the flow velocity profile, the T500 can be equiped with blades ranging from 7 to 20 m.
A T500 turbine is currently being customised for application in the Pentland Firth. With a diameter of 10 m in velocities of up to 3 m/s the turbine will have a nominal output of around 500kW.
The Pentland Firth is arguably one of the best concentrated tidal resources on earth. Estimates of the energy potential in this few square kilometres range from 2GW to 8GW. An objective has been set by public sector agencies and the Scottish Government to harness 1300MW of tidal energy in the Pentland Firth by 2020.

Tocardo has been on the ground in the Pentland Firth area since summer 2007, preparing a 10MW offshore tidal demo park. A pre-feasibility study has been prepared by Tocardo Tidal Energy to identify the tasks required for a Tidal Master Plan Study, which will be the route-map for the accelerated, large scale tidal energy development of the Pentland Firth.
Together with Bluewater Energy Services, Tocardo wants to develop several hundreds of megawatts of power in the Pentland Firth over the next 5 years.
