Background

Tocardo was initiated by Teamwork Technology in 1999. Teamwork Technology has a large network and vast experience in the field of renewables over the past 15 years, both in wind as in ocean energy. Being the developer of the Archimedes Wave Swing technology, the people within the company are well experienced in development of ocean energy devices.

During the Tocardo technology development route, many different concepts were investigated; amongst others a ring generator and a floating construction with a turbine in a venturi tube were completely engineered and tested. Throughout this process, the key objective remained: generate the cheapest and most reliable kWh's possible.

Going through both the technical and economical modelling process, it was soon realised that drastic choices had to be made in order to achieve this objective: focus on reliability and zero maintenance. Knowing this, all the experience in wave energy, the knowledge from 35 years of wind industry, topped up with the knowledge gained by exploring these different tidal energy concepts converged into the current Tocardo concept.
